This one great article from Suite101.com is very helpful. What might interests you is the money you saved by getting a tax cut from donating your car (or other items) to a charity might be much more from the money you get by selling it in a garage sale.  ;-)

What you need to do to enjoy your tax deduction:

• All of your donations must be itemized
• Check out the rules to claim tax cut from your donated vehicle
• Count your fair market value of your item
• Refer the value online or use tax software if you don't know how to count it
• Keep your donation receipt organized
